Empowering Your Pharma Field Team to Create Meaningful Connections with Providers

A patient’s prior authorization gets denied. The provider team wants to help, but isn’t sure what to try next. Submit an appeal? See if a patient assistance or bridge program exists? Try a different therapy altogether?

Pharmaceutical companies often have field team members who can help with exactly these types of challenges. Healthcare organizations, however, may not know whom to contact or how to reach the right person, and the process can be convoluted.

The most effective pharma field teams today aren’t necessarily the biggest or loudest, but the ones that make it easy for healthcare organizations to connect with the right person when a patient needs support. Today, with the right technology, pharmaceutical companies have the opportunity to make those connections faster and more consistently.

Why more touchpoints don’t always help

A large volume of communication does, in fact, take place between pharmaceutical companies and healthcare organizations. Historically, salesforce effectiveness has been measured through activity metrics such as calls and interactions, which has created an emphasis on frequency.

Yet more communication doesn’t equal better communication. According to a survey from Indegene, 47% of healthcare providers feel overwhelmed by content shared by pharma companies, especially product promotional content and emails from pharma sales representatives.

That said, providers aren’t necessarily asking for less communication altogether. A 2024 Bain & Company study found that 50% of physicians want more time with medical science liaisons, for example. In contrast, only 25% want more time with sales representatives. Along similar lines, research from ZS shows that providers place roughly twice as much value on practice knowledge over product knowledge.

Basically, healthcare organizations seek easier access to support they want and need, whether it’s to better understand clinical data or to find financial options for patients. The challenge is making those connections happen with the right people at the right moments.

Turning digital engagement into human support

How can pharmaceutical companies foster connections that are truly meaningful and helpful? The first factor to consider is the channel of communication. Providers report overwhelm from generic email outreach, but they aren’t opposed to digital engagement as a whole. A 2025 ZS survey found that nearly 70% of HCPs are receptive to digital interactions, with roughly half preferring digital interactions over in-person engagement.

Digital, however, doesn’t mean impersonal. McKinsey analysts say interactions need to be personalized and connected to real problems providers are trying to solve. Boston Consulting Group also found that physicians prefer a mix of virtual and in-person engagement rather than either channel alone. According to ZS research, what sets companies apart is how digital services are paired with human support, such as direct contacts for urgent issues or help during insurance appeals.

In other words, technology should make field teams easier to reach for practical, patient-focused, and time-specific support.

Bringing support into provider workflows

The time- and topic-specificity of provider challenges is what often stands in the way of meaningful connections. Field team members aren’t mind readers. They don’t automatically know exactly when a care team needs support.

For pressing matters, healthcare teams often need to initiate the conversation when an issue comes up on their end. But to reach the right person, a provider today may need to go through a multi-step process: track down a sales representative, explain the issue, wait for the representative to identify the right specialist based on therapy, region, and type of support needed, then coordinate a follow-up, all while adhering to the health system’s specific policies around manufacturer engagement. The process can be frustrating and time-consuming, putting workflows on hold while a patient waits on treatment.

A better approach is to make the right field team member easy for the provider to access within their existing workflow, at the point of need. If a prior authorization is denied, for example, a provider should be able to immediately connect with someone who can provide the appropriate support rather than spend time figuring out whether they need a field reimbursement manager, nurse navigator, or another specialist, then determining how to reach them.

Putting support within reach

By making the right member of the field team accessible when challenges arise, pharmaceutical companies can help create more meaningful interactions and ultimately support better patient access to therapy.

This can also help close the trust gap pharmaceutical companies face today. While 75% of healthcare providers trust pharma's clinical data, only 25% trust pharma companies as a partner for their institution, according to a ZS survey. Providers may believe the science, but still remain skeptical about whether their engagement efforts are aligned with the realities of patient care.

Pharma field teams can help close that gap by offering timely support. This solves patient access issues, gives providers direct solutions to pressing problems, and benefits manufacturers, too. Providers who perceive a company as genuinely patient-focused are up to 80% more likely to recommend, prescribe, and engage with that company, according to a BCG study. Helping patients overcome barriers to treatment isn’t just good practice, it’s good business.
